FOLK CLUB RETURNS TO ROCKY
Following the great success of last year’s BobFest, Coowonga Folk Club is again coming to Rockhampton with their first Music event for 2010 to be held at the Fitzroy Motor Boat Club on Quay Street on Sunday 21st February.
“Sunday on the River” will feature performances by the eclectic Celtic Music duo “Damage with Care” fresh from the Sunshine Coast and the folk music “find” of 2009, singer/songwriter Andy Redfern, supported by a number of experienced performers from the club as well as guest musicians in a “Come All Ye” segment.
The music session will go from 2pm-8pm at the Fitzroy Motor Boat Club’s on Quay St overlooking the Fitzroy River where there will be a licensed bar and hot food from dusk. Admission cost is $5.00 ($2.00 for CFC members).
“Damage With Care is a collaborative effort from two musicians to revolutionise the celtic, folk and country scenes all at the same time. They play a mixture of covers, original songs and traditional (and not so traditional) Celtic tunes.
Some artists they cover include Luka Bloom, Flogging Molly, Colin Hay, Indigo Girls, Garth Brooks, U2, Missy Higgins and Del Amitri resulting in a full flavoured mix with strong Celtic undertones.
Both multi-instrumentalists, Mark and Rachel bring together vocals, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki, whistle and when they’ve had enough to drink, spoons.
Formerly stalwarts of the Maleny and Sunshine Coast folk music scene, Mark and Rachel have recently moved to the Rockhampton area.”
“Andy Redfern is a singer/songwriter of remarkable insight and maturity, whose finely crafted songs of life and love are musically captivating and lyrically beautiful. His songs are presented with humour and warmth in a lived-in voice that incorporates the experience of a life lived in the real world.
Andy’s work will appeal to fans of the songs of country-folk artists like John Prine, Guy Clark and Chris Smither.
Following a number of folk club gigs and a public debut at last year’s Village Festival, Andy will play this year at several Music Festivals around the country. With the “grown-up” appeal of his songs, this artist has the potential to become a major performer on the Festival circuit
Andy plays acoustic guitar and banjo and will also be accompanied by local maestro Damian Clark on mandolin, guitar and banjo.”
Other upcoming events for the folk club include Bobfest 2010, celebrating songwriting and musican wonder Bob Dylan’s birthday featuring 69 of songs performed by 15 different local artists. The concert will be held Saturday 22 May at the Walter Reid Cultural Centre.
